Who was Louis Wain?
Born in London in 1860, Louis Wain revolutionized cat art with his unique and imaginative illustrations. An illustrator, painter, and visual storyteller, his life was marked by talent, financial hardship, and mental illness, yet he left behind an indelible artistic legacy.
“He truly captured the essence of the cat. He invented a feline style, a feline society, an entire world of cats. Cats in the United Kingdom who do not follow the example of Louis Wain’s cats and do not live like them should be ashamed of themselves.”
H.G. Wells – Writer

Style & Technique
Wain began with realistic landscapes and animals, then went on to create anthropomorphic cats featuring vibrant colors and psychedelic compositions. His technique combined meticulous detail with chromatic experimentation, foreshadowing many modern artistic styles.

The Cats of Louis Wain
Wain’s cats are more than just animals: they convey stories, emotions, and relationships with humans. Through Peter the cat and other characters, Wain created a feline universe that reflects society and the human psyche, becoming a symbol of joy, compassion, and imagination.

"His art is becoming increasingly abstract, but his technique and skill as a painter remain exceptional. This is not a sign of mental decline; it is pure creativity.”
Michael Fitzgerald – Psychiatrist and art critic
